The goal is to prevent threats like unauthorized access, active shooters, or other incidents while aligning with best practices (e.g., NABITA BTAM principles, FEMA guidelines, and school safety standards).

Adapted Template Outline for Schools.
  • Facility Description → Add school-specific: bell schedule, drop-off/pick-up procedures, portables.
  • Key Areas of Concern → Examples: Unsecured playgrounds, single-point entry failures, classroom lockdown gaps.
  • Perimeter & Exterior → Emphasize student/parent traffic, bus zones.
  • Interior → Focus on classrooms (can they be locked quickly?), safe rooms, and evacuation routes.
  • Auditorium/City Council Chambers → Change to “Auditorium/Gym/Cafeteria”.
  • Roof Access → Critical for preventing unauthorized entry.
  • Plans and Procedures → Add active shooter/lockdown drills, BTAM integration, visitor management.

Observation: Fencing is 4′ chain-link fence with multiple gaps near the playground. Gates are often left open during recess.
 
Options for Consideration:

  • Install 6-8′ climb-resistant fencing with anti-climb tops.
  • Add self-closing/locking gates with alarms.
  • Use bollards at vehicle approaches (reference FEMA 426).

  • Budget – Friendly Starts: Signage, policy changes, better lighting, door wedges removed — before expensive cameras/bollards.
